How can I translate the passato prossimo into English?

In the examples above, we used both verb tenses (simple past and present perfect) in English to translate the passato prossimo.
Both is correct.

💡 Here are two easy to follow rules, when using English verb tenses in your translations.

  1. If the action of the sentence is connected to the present or has an ongoing relevance → use the present perfect.
    💬 Examples:
Ho studiato per l’esame. – I have studied for the exam.
  2. If the action happened at a specific point in the past → use the simple past.
You can find markers like “ieri” (yesterday), “scorsa settimana” (last week), “dieci anni fa” (ten years ago) in these sentences.
    💬 Examples:
Ieri ho studiato per l’esame. – Yesterday, I studied for the exam.
