The Italian Verb

Italian verbs can be a bit complex because they change form based on various factors, such as tense, mood, and the person performing an action.
However, the following pages will ease you in and you will be able to form sentences very quickly.

Italian verbs can be found in different moods

Italian verbs are divided into several moods.
Each mood indicates a different way an action is being expressed.
The infinitive shows the base form of a verb.
The indicative is used for statements of facts.
The subjunctive (ital. congiuntivo) expresses wishes, possibilities, or doubts.
The conditional mood tells about hypothetical actions or polite requests.
Use the imperative for your Italian commands and requests!

Italian verbs can be grouped in three classes

Italian verbs can be divided into three conjugation classes.
There are verbs ending in ā€œ-areā€, ā€œ-ereā€ and ā€œ-ireā€.

💡 If you remove these endings, you get the verb stem.

Please keep in mind: you need the verb stem to be able to form different tenses.

💬 Example:
mandare – to send
scrivere – to write
partire – to leave, to depart

⚠ Please note that Italian has regular and several irregular verbs.
We advise you to pay special attention to the irregular verbs and memorise them by heart.
That will provide you with a solid basis for expressing everything you want to talk about in Italian.
