The Imperative in Italian

The Italian imperative is used to express commands, requests and demands.
The imperative forms for the “tu”-form (2nd singular), the “voi”-form (2nd plural) and the “no”- form (1st plural) correspond to the forms of the present.

💬 Examples:
Aspetta! (sg) – (you) Wait!
Aspettate! (pl) – (you) Wait!
Aspettiamo! – Let’s wait!

You only need to rethink the “lei”-form (polite form, 3rd sg):
Here, an “- i” is added to the stem of verbs ending in “-are”, whereas an “-a” is added to verbs ending in “-ere” and “-ire”.

💬 Examples:
Aspetti! – Wait! (formal)
Parta! – Leave! (formal)

The negation of the imperative is formed by placing a “non” in front of the imperative form.
Please note, there is one exception: the negated “tu”-form is formed with “non” and the infinitive.
Here, the verb stays in the infinitive and is not conjugated.

💬 Examples:
Non aspettare! (sg) – (you) Don’t wait!
Non aspettate! (pl) – (you) Don’t wait!
Non aspettiamo! – Let’s not wait!
Non aspetti! – Don’t wait! (formal)
Non parta! – Don’t leave! (formal)
Non ascoltarlo! – Do not listen to him!
