Building the Present Tense in Italian


 

The present tense is used for describing actions in the present, general statements, and actions that will happen in the near future.
The present is formed by adding typical endings to the verb stem, depending on the conjugation class.

Present tense of regular Italian verbs

cantare
to sing
scrivere
to write
sentire
to listen
io (I) canto scrivo sento
tu (you) canti scrivi senti
lui / lei / Lei
(he/she/it)
canta scrive sente
noi (we) cantiamo scriviamo sentiamo
voi / Voi (you) cantate scrivete sentite
loro (they) cantano scrivono sentono
 

💬 Example:
Scrivi una lettera? – Are you writing a letter?
Domani la mandiamo. – We'll send it tomorrow.
Il postino parte alle nove. – The postman leaves at nine.
Io canto una canzone. – I sing a song.
Loro cantano alla festa. – They sing at the party.
Lei sente la musica. – She hears the music.
Senti il vento? – Do you feel the wind?
Sento un rumore. – I hear a noise.

Why are some personal pronouns missing in some examples?
Please note that in Italian personal pronouns are not mandatory.
