The progressive form of Spanish verbs – the “gerundio”

Spanish verbs also know a progressive form – it’s called “gerundio”.

Building the gerundio:

General rules:

-ar verbs: verb stem + -ando

-er/-ir verbs: verb stem + -iendo

💡 For example:
viajando – travelling
comiendo – eating
abriendo – opening

The progressive forms in Spanish are built by combining “estar” with the gerundio.

💡 For example:
estoy hablando – I am speaking
estaba leyendo – he was reading
