What's essential to know about about Spanish adverbs?

Basically Spanish adverbs have the same function as in English: they modify (for example a verb or an adjective).

Like in the English language, we have two types of adverbs in Spanish:

  1. The first type ist derrived from an adjective.
To derive the adverb from the adjective, the general rule is to take the feminine singular form of the adjective and add “-mente” at the end.

    💡 For example:

rapida (f, sg) → rapidamente (Adv.)
Juan come rápidamente. – Juan eats fast.

    tranquila (f, sg) → tranquilamente
MarĂa duerme tranquilamente. – Maria sleeps quietly.

  2. The second type covers adverbs that exist on their own – and they are not derived from an adjective.

💡 Examples for commonly used temporal adverbs in Spanish:
    pronto – soon, shortly
    ahora – now
    hoy – today

💡 Examples for commonly used Spanish modal adverbs:
    solo – only, just
    ojalĂ  – hopefully
    quizĂ s – maybe

💡 Examples for commonly used causal adverbs in Spanish:
    por eso – therefore, hence
    es decir – namely

💡Examples for commonly used Spanish local adverbs:
    arriba – above, up
    abajo – down, below
a la derecha – on the right
a la sinistra – on the left
