What's good to know about relative adjectives in Croatian?

Let's take a closer look at the second type of adjectives in Croatian, the relative adjectives.
Relative adjectives describe the relations between animate/inanimate beings.
The English language would tend to use several nouns to describe relations like this – but Croatian likes to handle this job with the help of relative adjectives.

💡 For example:
gradski zid – city wall / the wall surrounding the city
mačja hrana – cat food / food for the cat
Učim gramatiku hrvatskog jezika. – I'm learning Croatian grammar (lit.: the grammar of the Croatian language).
Kakav je bio tvoj studentski život? – What was your student life like?

Relative Adjectives only know a definite form and can be declined – but they don't have comparative forms, so you can not compare them.

You can build a relative adjective by taking a Croatian noun and adding e.g. -ski or -nih, -nji at the end.
💡 For example:
noun: grad – city, municipality
relative adjective: gradski – civic, municipal
Gradski promet je vrlo gust. – The city traffic is very dense.

A sub-category of relative adjectives: possessive adjectives

This type of adjective is new to you as an English native speaker.
Croatian possessive adjectives are build from Croatian nouns.
They have masculine, feminine and neuter forms which are declined.

If you want to translate a Croatian sentence which contains a relative adjective into English, you use the genitive.
💡 For example:
Anin stol – Ana's table
Anina knjiga – Ana's book
Anino srce – Ana's heart
