Cases in Slovak

💡 In Slovak there are six cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, locative and instrumental.

The nominative case answers the question “who/ what?”.

💬 Examples: nominative

The genitive answers the question “whose?”
💬 Examples: genitive

Otcova škola je veľká. ‒ Father's school is big.

The dative answers to the question “whom?”
💬 Examples: dative

The accusative answers the question “whom/ what?”.
💬 Examples: accusative

Žiak sa pýta učiteľa. ‒ The pupil asks the teacher.

The locative designates a place and always comes together with a preposition.
This case answers the question “where/ about what?”.

Hovoríme o Eve. ‒ We are talking about Eva.

The instrumental determines a remedy and answers the question “by which/ through which/ with whom/ with what?”.
