Use of the subjuntivo

The subjuntivo in Portuguese is used in the following settings:

• to express commands
  💬 e.g.
  Escutem-me! – Listen to me!
• Numerous verbs in Portuguese require that the verb in the associated dependent clause is in the subjunctive.
  💬 e.g.
  desejar, exigir, mandar, pedir, proibir, querer, recomendar
  Pedimos-lhe que nos ajude. – We ask you to help us.
• Verbs expressing feelings and subjective sensations require the subjunctive.
  💬 e.g.
  esperar, gostar que, lamentar, sentir
  Espero que tenha ajudado com esta informação. – I hope that I have helped with that information.
• The subjunctive follows after impersonal expressions.
  💬 e.g.
  É bom/melhor que + subjuntivo ... – It is good/better that ...
• We find the subjunctive in conditional clauses.
  💬 e.g.
  Se eu soubesse disso, então eu poderia talvez te ajudar. – If I had known that, I might have been able to help you.
• Some conjunctions in Portuguese also require the subjunctive.
  💬 e.g.
  ainda que, caso, desde que, embora, para que
