Passive in Portuguese

The formation of the passive (a voz passiva) in Portuguese is very much the same as in English, using a form of the verb ‘ser’ meaning ‘to be’ and a past participle.
The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject.

What do you have to consider when changing a sentence from active to passive?

  • The offender of a passive sentence is marked with “por” (from) or “de” (from).
    💬 e.g.
amada pelo [por + o] Luís – loved by Luís
  • The particĂpio passado is used like an adjective.
    💬 e.g.
    🇵🇹 A Cristina Ă© amada pelo LuĂs.
🇬🇧 Cristina is loved by LuĂs.
  • The irregular form of the particĂpio passado is always used to form the passive.
  • If the perpetrator of the action is not named in a passive sentence, you can also construct this sentence with the reflexive form of the verb and thus avoid the passive as a tense.
    💬 e.g.
vendem-se casas – houses for sale
