Comparison of Greek adjectives

In order to introduce the comparative either the word πιο is used or the suffixes -ότερος, -ότερη, -ότερο.
The comparative compares two objects and puts/lifts one of them on a higher level in order to stress the different levels.

The comparative demonstrates a higher or lower level of a reference words' characteristics.

💡 Examples:
  • Ο αδερφός μου είναι πιο μικρός από εμένα. / Ο αδερφός μου είναι μικρότερος από εμένα.
My brother is younger than me.
  • Η Κατερίνα είναι πιο αδύνατη από την Ελένη.
    Katerina is slimmer than Eleni.
  • Το σπίτι τους είναι πιο μεγάλο από το δικό μας. / Το σπίτι τους είναι μεγαλύτερο από το δικό μας.
Their house is bigger than ours.

The superlative indicates the highest degree of a feature. It is frequently used along with a comparison.
The superlative is formed by using

  • the indefinite article and πιο or
  • the definite article and the suffix (ending) of the comparative -ότερος, -ότερη, -ότερο.
💡 Examples:
  • Το αυτοκίνητό του είναι το πιο γρήγορο απ' όλα. / Το αυτοκίνητό μου είναι το γρηγορότερο απ' όλα.
His car is the fastest car of all.
  • Ο Στέφανος είναι ο πιο ψηλός απ´ όλους στην τάξη. / Ο Στέφανος είναι ο ψηλότερος απ' όλους στην τάξη.
Stefanos is the tallest (student) in his class.

The elativ indicates the very high level of a feature.
Other than the comparative and the superlative the elative does not require/demand a comparison.
It is formed by the suffix -ότατος, -ότατη, -ότατο gebildet.

💡 Examples:
Ο δρόμος είναι στενότατος.
The street is very narrow.
Η μαμά της Μαρίας είναι ωραιότατη.
Maria‘s mother is very beautiful.
Το μήλο είναι ωριμότατο.
The apple is very ripe.
